Jay Folberg is the recipient of the 2011 Lifetime Achivement Award.
Jay Folberg has been an active mediator for 40 years and is the Executive Director of the JAMS Institute and the JAMS Foundation. He is former Dean and Professor Emeritus at the University of San Francisco School of Law. Professor Folberg served as president of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, president of the Academy of Family Mediators, and chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the Association of American Law Schools. He chaired the California Judicial Council Task Force on ADR and its Blue Ribbon Panel on Arbitration Ethics. He was honored in 2003 with the Judicial Council's Bernard Witkin Amicus Curiae Award for his leadership in the field of alternative dispute resolution and his outstanding contributions to the California courts. Professor Folberg is also the recipient of the Academy of Family Mediators Distinguished Mediator Award and the Mediation Society's Distinguished Contribution to Mediation Award.
Folberg received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall) in 1968. He practiced law in Portland, Oregon, as a litigator, was the founding Executive Director of Oregon Legal Services, regularly served as a judge Pro Tem, and has been elected to membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). His coauthored books include, Resolving Disputes: Theory, Practice and Law, 2nd Ed. (2010); Mediation-The Roles of Advocate and Neutral, 2nd Ed. (2011); Lawyer Negotiation 2nd Ed. (2011); Divorce and Family Mediation Models, Techniques and Applications (2004), Mediation: A Comprehensive Guide (1984). He has conducted mediation and negotiation trainings around the world.

Experience as a litigator of commercial and insurance cases (Rives & Schwab, now Stoel Rives), as well as civil rights, education, consumer related disputes, including class actions, in state and federal courts (founding Executive Director of Oregon Legal Services)As a professor, taught trial practice, civil procedure, family law, and ADR courses at the University of San Francisco (Dean 1989-1999), Northwestern School of Law - Lewis and Clark College, the University of Washington, and the National Judicial College.
